How to Choose a Destination for Your First Ski Holiday: 8 Criteria for Beginners

The best resort for your first ski holiday is not the biggest one but the one that suits a beginner best. Look at eight criteria: (1) a beginner area with a magic carpet, (2) the share of easy runs and access to them, (3) altitude and reliable snow, (4) travel time, (5) the hotel's distance from the slopes, (6) crowds, (7) off-slope experiences and social life, (8) budget and visa. In Türkiye, Erciyes stands out for first-timers with its large beginner areas and training area; once you can ski, the forest runs of Sarıkamış or, abroad, Bansko make a good next step. Once you have chosen the resort, a winter activity holiday that combines lessons, equipment and ski pass in a single package makes your first experience easier.

The 8-point checklist

#CriterionWhy does it matter for a beginner?
1Beginner area with a magic carpetYour first day is spent on a flat, safe area with no lifts
2Share of easy runs and access to themThe runs you will use from day two onwards
3Altitude and reliable snowIf there is not enough snow, runs, including the beginner area, may close
4Travel timeOn a short holiday, time on the road eats into time on the slopes
5Hotel's distance from the slopesDaily transfer time and fatigue
6CrowdsA crowded beginner area and lift queues slow down learning
7Off-slope experiences and social lifeEvenings and bad-weather days
8Budget and visaSki pass, lessons and, abroad, a visa

1–2. Beginner area and easy runs

For a beginner, the first and most important criterion is the beginner area: a wide, gently sloping area served by a magic carpet. On day one, this is where you learn balance, the snowplough and stopping. From day two onwards you need easy access to easy runs (blue in Europe, green at some resorts). Compare how many easy runs each resort has using the run colours.

For example, each of the four gates of Erciyes has a beginner area with a magic carpet, and 18 of its 41 runs are easy; at Kartalkaya, the large majority of runs on the Dorukkaya side are easy and there are baby lifts; at Palandöken, there are beginner areas with magic carpets on the main square, but more than half of the runs are black.

3. Altitude and snow

Higher altitude usually means a longer, more reliable snow season. The resorts with the highest ski areas in Türkiye include Erciyes (up to 3,346 m), Palandöken (3,140 m) and Ergan (about 2,970 m). Although Sarıkamış is lower (about 2,130–2,630 m), it is known for its dry, light snow; the Ministry of Culture and Tourism gives the best period as 20 December – 20 March. Whether snowmaking is available also matters. You can find the altitudes of all resorts in our comparison table of ski resorts in Türkiye.

4–5. Transport and accommodation

On a short holiday, travel time comes straight out of your time on the slopes. Resorts close to a city (Palandöken is 4–7 km from Erzurum, Ergan 12 km from Erzincan) make getting there easier; being close to an airport also matters. The hotel's distance from the slopes affects every day: at a ski-in/ski-out hotel you ski back to the hotel, while if you stay in town or in another area, there is a transfer every day. That does not have to be a disadvantage: on Doğadayız Erciyes programmes, accommodation is deliberately in Ürgüp so that you can spend your evenings in Cappadocia; the transfer to the resort takes about 1 hour 10 minutes.

6. Crowds

A crowded beginner area and long lift queues make the first days harder. In Türkiye, the busiest period is the mid-year school holiday (sömestr; in 2026–27, 25 January – 5 February 2027). If possible, go outside this period, and choose weekdays rather than weekends.

7. Off-slope experiences and social life

On your first ski holiday, part of the day is spent off the slopes: evenings, tired legs and bad-weather days. Having somewhere to visit in the area, a place to go in the evening and a group rounds off the holiday. That is why Cappadocia at Erciyes, the mountain hotel in the forest and its evening events at Sarıkamış, and the town's live music venues in Bansko matter.

8. Budget and visa

Ski pass and lesson prices vary from resort to resort; for details, see our guide What Makes Up the Price of a Ski Holiday?. Abroad, you also need to factor in a visa: Bulgaria is in the Schengen area, and a visa is required with a burgundy passport.

You have chosen the resort: what next?

After deciding on the resort, it is time to plan lessons, equipment, ski pass, accommodation and transfers. Rather than arranging each of these separately, combining them all in an activity holiday package is the way to make the fewest mistakes on your first trip. Doğadayız winter programmes take place in Erciyes, Sarıkamış and Bansko, and each one is a social adventure holiday run as a group. For a step-by-step plan, see our guide How to Plan Your First Ski Holiday, and for the programmes, see our winter activity holidays page.

Doğadayız social adventure holiday

The easiest way to learn to ski: a winter activity holiday

An activity holiday puts a sport at the heart of your trip: transport, accommodation and meals are planned, so you can focus on learning on the slopes. On Doğadayız winter activity holidays, accommodation, ski pass and ski or snowboard equipment are included in every package; course packages include basic lessons with instructors affiliated with the Turkish Ski Federation, while experience packages let you practise on the slopes at your own level.

What makes the programme different is the group: sharing the slopes with people at a similar level, dinners and nights out together, and a group leader by your side at all times. Solo travellers become part of this social adventure holiday from day one. That is why we describe our programmes as a social adventure holiday.

Frequently asked questions

Which ski resort is right for a first ski holiday?

One with a wide beginner area with a magic carpet, easy access to easy runs and reliable snow. In Türkiye, Erciyes stands out for first-timers with the beginner areas at its four gates and its training area.

Does altitude matter for a beginner?

Yes. Higher altitude usually means a longer, more reliable snow season; snowmaking also supports the season. Erciyes, Palandöken and Ergan are among the resorts with the highest ski areas in Türkiye.

Türkiye or abroad for a first ski holiday?

For someone who has never skied, it is more practical to start at a resort in Türkiye with a large training area; no visa or long journey is needed. Once you start skiing on your own, a European resort such as Bansko is a good next step.

Does the hotel have to be close to the slopes?

It is not essential, but it affects your day. At ski-in/ski-out hotels no transfer is needed; if you stay in another area, there is a transfer every day. Some programmes deliberately stay in town or in a nearby tourist area so that you can experience the region in the evenings.
